Forward, Together

Hi Norfolk,

If we haven’t met yet, my name is Jeremy McGee.

I've spent over two decades building successful companies.  It has been a highlight of my career to build businesses right here in Norfolk.  Bringing employees, clients, and friends to Norfolk and showing them the best city in the world never gets old.  Now, I'm taking my passion for Norfolk to a new level by running for Norfolk City Council Superward 6.

Norfolk has come a long way in the last few decades. We’ve transformed our city into the cultural heart of the state, hundreds of small businesses have set up shop here, and we have an incredible foundation for growth. With our miles of waterfront, a fast growing airport, the world's largest navy base, the deepest port on the East Coast, and some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, we have so many opportunities to shine.

But there is much more work to be done to live up to our potential.  If we sit idly by, we will be out-competed by Richmond, Raleigh, and other cities right here in our backyard, businesses will struggle, and our kids will continue to move away.  Our momentum could turn into decline.

We need bold and experienced leadership to fight for the Norfolk we know is possible.  We have to keep pushing to build a great Norfolk for homeowners, a great Norfolk for families, a great Norfolk for students, a great Norfolk for starting businesses, a great Norfolk for seniors, creatives, and innovators.

I look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts on how we can lead Norfolk forward together. I hope you’ll consider signing up, volunteering, and donating to our campaign to realize our city's vast potential!

On the Issues

Strengthening Safety
It’s hard to call a place home without having peace of mind, and Norfolk residents deserve to feel at ease on their streets. I want to empower our first responders with the tools and resources they need to keep Norfolk safe. Our police officers are continually overworked, we still have too many open positions on the force, and urgent 911 calls often have unacceptable wait times. I will continually advocate for funding, more staffing, and the right work environments for our first responders.
Streamlining for Business
I’ve heard from too many business owners that navigating the city bureaucracy can be a major burden. I saw it first hand in my own businesses and on the City Planning Commission. Norfolk has to attract new and expanding businesses in order to keep our economy competitive, and the first step is making sure we’re easy to work with.
Getting The Basics Right
As a business owner I know the importance of having a great product. Norfolk has to deliver essential city services with absolute excellence. Our current residents deserve them and we won’t win over new residents without them. Whether it’s customer service to our citizens through Norfolk Cares and other channels, or it’s the everyday work of keeping streetlights lit, maintaining our parks, beaches, and open spaces, or traffic and code enforcement , we cannot accept lackluster services that result in declining quality of life in our neighborhoods. I promise to ensure these essential services get the funding and focus they deserve.
Reducing the housing Burden
We can’t compete as a city if the cost of quality housing continues to rise. Norfolk has one of the highest property tax rates in the region and I support a rate reduction. I also support pursuing common sense zoning reforms that increase housing supply and make it easier for more families to afford to live in Norfolk. It’s the right thing to do for our neighbors, and it’s the right thing to do for our future
Elevating education
Norfolk Public Schools saw just 57% of schools get fully accredited in the 2022-2023 school year and we spend more per pupil than any of our neighboring cities. In any class, that’s a failing grade. If we don’t right the ship, families will move away, our workforce will not be competitive, and we’ll sow the seeds of decline. If elected I will ensure this topic gets the attention it deserves from City Council and I will work closely with the School Board to drive our public schools forward.
responding with resilience
Norfolk’s fight for resilience is multifaceted. Some streets need advanced storm surge protection, some need new stormwater infrastructure, while others need solutions specific to their circumstance. We must listen to our neighbors to understand the problems on every street and we must work together to find solutions. I’ll fight to make sure every neighbor is heard, our budget has the funding to provide relief, our State and Federal partners are at the table, and that Norfolk keeps rising faster than the water.
